you don't have to pay union dues if you are in a union shop. what you do have to do is if you are getting benefits from organizing, higher wages and benefits, you need to pay a fair share of the actual bargaining costs because you're benefiting from that. in fact, right now ender law if you are not paying money into a union, if you get fired, the union still needs to defend you and if they don't you can sue them. this is about fairness. if a worker is getting the benefits of having an organization in that workplace, they should pay their fair share of those costs because of the benefits that they are getting. that's what this is. it's about fairness. and not to do this, this would be like saying to people, well, you can have all the benfys of social security but you have the option of not paying into it if you like but you still get the benefits. of course people are going to say, why pay in, i'm not going to pay. and if everybody decides not to pay, then social security falls apart. that's really what's at stake here with unions. it's an attem
